Mahler - FAQ

What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is a metallic alloy containing mainly iron, chrome and nickel.

Is there more than one type of stainless steel?
Yes. Stainless steels are divided in three families: ferritic, austenitic and martensitic, each of them with different alloys and properties.

Why are there several types of stainless steel?
Variations in the alloys have been created in order to meet specific qualities, such as, resistance to acids (laboratory equipment), resistance to high temperatures (oven coating), resistance to wear and tear (surgical equipment, knifes) and general use (sinks, trays, casseroles, sticks, joints, etc.).

Does stainless steel “peel”?
No. Stainless steel is a homogeneous material without a superficial layer. If it is sawed, sandpapered or pierced it will still keep its characteristics.

Why use stainless steel?
Stainless steel is a noble material. It keeps its qualities virtually unchanged for long periods of time. It has great cost-effectiveness.

What are the advantages of using stainless steel and not brass hardware?
Stainless steel joints, locks and other hardware have better resistance to wear and tear and corrosion, and works perfectly much longer.

Is stainless steel recyclable?
Yes, it is 100% recyclable by simple fusion, by which it will be turned into raw material again. However, due to the fact that stainless steel materials are durable, this process is repeated few times.

What types of screws should be used with stainless steel parts?
In order to prevent rusting liberated by a regular screw deposited in the surface of the stainless steel or that the decreased resistance offered by a brass screw jeopardizes its durability, it is advisable to use stainless steel screws as well. Corrosion also occurs because of the difference of potentials between two different types of metal.

What is the predominant industrial process to manufacture Mahler-Inox products?
Metalúrgica Mahler uses eccentric presses in its main processes. There are also complementary operations, such as milling, weld, mounting, polishing, etc...

  • Has Mahler acted in other segments already?
No. Mahler has been working since its foundation in 1958 with stainless steel materials.
